If it’s your first pregnancy, you might need some help in building up your maternity wardrobe. Indeed, there are so many maternity clothes in shops that you might be at a loss. Here is a short guide to the world of maternity wear.
First, you need to decide which items you have to buy. If you prefer denim items, you don’t necessarily need to switch for romantic dresses. If you need to stick to strict clothes, you can find them, too. Fortunately, fashion designers care of mums-to-be when creating new collections and you can get items which follow the latest fashion trends. Study your wardrobe carefully and make a list of items you have there. Remember what you wear every day and what was completely lost deep in your wardrobe until now. Thus, you can get an idea which maternity clothes you need to buy.
Second, study your regular clothes again. Are there any stretching tops, tunics or dresses featuring under-bust designs? They may be a good alternative to maternity wear during the first few months. Make a list of items which should be bought now and which you can buy later.
Third, go to maternity shops. You might be tempted to go to your favourite shop and pick a few loose items from the latest collection considering that you can feel comfortable if you go up in size but it doesn’t always work. Maternity clothes can accommodate your growing bump better and have the same size as your pre-pregnancy ones so you are not going to be at a loss. Besides that, shop assistants can help you select the most comfortable item to accommodate your changing curves. When you are just a few months, maternity clothes may seem to be too large and you might want to go for smaller size. It might be difficult for you to imagine how you are going to look when you are nine months so follow shop assistants’ advice – they have already helped other mums-to-be.
Fourth, choose items which can grow with you. If you are to make a choice on your own, pick maternity clothes made of stretching fabrics. Choose dresses with adjustable side ties which allow wearing them throughout your pregnancy. Go for trousers and jeans with jersey bands which can provide enough room for your little one. Think about the season. If it’s summer and you are a three month along you don’t need to buy summer dresses. When shopping, go for natural fabrics such as cotton, silk, wool and linen. The best solution is to pick items which feature the combination of stretching and natural fabrics as they allow you to breathe, absorb sweat and at the same time can stretch.
Fifth, team your new maternity clothes with matching shoes. Some women find it uncomfortable to continue wearing high heels when pregnant. If you stick to the same opinion, go for peep toe flat shoes or wedge sandals featuring ankle straps with buckle closure for warmer weather or canvas boots with slim soles and adjustable buckle ankle straps for cooler days. Mid height heels and wedges can be a good alternative to your favourite high heels.
