Breastfeeding Week 1-7 August 2013 concentrates on Breastfeeding Peer Counselling, highlighting the fact that even when mothers are able to get off to a good start, all too often in the weeks or months after delivery there is a sharp decline in breastfeeding rates, particularly in exclusive breastfeeding.
Continued support to sustain nursing can be provided in a variety of ways, including Peer Counsellors who are trained to support mothers. World Breastfeeding Week aims to draw attention to the importance of Peer Support, as well as training breastfeeding supporters, identifying local community support contacts for breastfeeding mothers and calling on governments globally to implement steps to improve the duration and rates of breastfeeding.
